Program Details and Curriculum

Building upon the distinguished legacy of Yale School of Nursing, the Planetary Health Leadership Program integrates sustainability, health equity, and meaningful global partnership engagement. 

Beyond leadership development, the program strengthens Yale’s global collaborations, expands its contributions to planetary health education, and reinforces YSN’s emerging role as a leader in innovation across nursing and health systems.

Program Format at a Glance

  • Live sessions: Two 60-minute synchronous sessions per week via Zoom (all sessions recorded)
  • Asynchronous learning: Curated readings and short pre-recorded faculty modules each week
  • Capstone project: An individual leadership deliverable developed iteratively across all 8 weeks, with structured weekly milestones
  • Optional in-person extension: Planetary Health & Global Engagement Conference at Yale (self-funded)
  • Alumni network: Sustained post-program access to YSN faculty, peers, and global partners

Curriculum Overview

The program is structured as an 8-week immersive journey, with each week built around a thematic focus that progressively deepens leadership practice. Every week integrates live sessions, asynchronous learning, and a capstone milestone—ensuring that participants are not just learning concepts but applying them in real time to a leadership challenge of their own choosing.

  • Foundations of Global & Planetary Health Leadership

    Apply inclusive leadership principles to core planetary health concepts and their implications for healthcare leadership practice.

  • Health Equity & Sustainability in Health

    Diagnose structural inequities and environmental impacts using systems-thinking and sustainability frameworks to identify leadership levers for institutional change.

  • Global Partnerships & Collaboration

    Develop strategies for effective interprofessional collaboration, health diplomacy, and global partnership-building in diverse contexts.

  • Implementation Science

  • Arts, Space & Giving Grace

    Creative expression and reflective practice as tools for personal and organizational transformation, including burnout, medical humanities, and holistic wellbeing.

  • AI, Chronic Diseases & Environmental Health

    AI-driven health solutions, chronic disease prevention, and the environmental health impacts of technology—with a focus on ethics and equity.

  • Mental Health, Well-being & Sustainable Leadership

    Sustainable impact and leadership identity: individual and collective effectiveness, mental health, influence, persuasion, and decision-making.

  • Adaptive Thematic Exploration & Capstone Showcase

    Examine political determinants of health and policymaking; consolidate learning through final capstone showcases and a 30-day leadership commitment.

Key Learning Outcomes

By the end of the Planetary Health Leadership Program, you will be able to: 

  • Analyze intersections between planetary health, equitable access, and healthcare leadership within a defined professional context.
  • Apply sustainability frameworks and systems-thinking lenses to diagnose structural inequities and environmental impacts within health systems.
  • Design an evidence-based leadership intervention using implementation science principles to address global or local health disruptions.
  • Demonstrate effective interprofessional and global collaboration skills in team-based leadership work.
  • Reflect on leadership identity and articulate a forward-looking vision for sustained impact in planetary health.
  • Produce an individual capstone deliverable that translates learning into an actionable leadership strategy and gain formal recognition from Yale University.

Leadership Capstone

  • Complete the personalized intake survey
  • Engage with pre-knowledge modules (planetary health, cultural intelligence, leadership frameworks)
  • Submit your initial “leadership wish list” reflection. 

Articulate core principles of planetary health; frame your individual capstone challenge; select a deliverable format and submit your initial Capstone Brief.

Analyze your leadership challenge through systems-thinking and equity lenses; map stakeholders and structural drivers; submit a refined problem statement and visual constituency map.

Develop innovative strategy options using cultural and systems lenses; assess positionality and power dynamics; submit a strategic options draft with two directions and a rationale.

Translate your strategy into actionable interventions; identify policy and advocacy levers; define partnerships; submit a Policy/Advocacy + Partnerships Action Page and your first deliverable draft.

Use arts-based and reflective methods to examine leadership identity and sustainable practice; strengthen capstone narrative clarity; submit a Capstone Narrative & Giving Grace Addendum with an updated abstract.

Integrate AI/environmental health considerations and ethics/equity risks; define measurable evaluation metrics; deliver a midpoint share-out and submit Deliverable Draft v2.

Integrate well-being and sustainability considerations; adapt messaging for diverse audiences; submit a Well-being & Sustainability Note and near-final deliverable draft.

Deliver your final 5-minute individual capstone showcase; submit your final deliverable; articulate a 30-day leadership commitment; join the vision circle and alumni network activation.
